Whether you're exploring a future in medical laboratory sciences or completing a placement with us, our labs offer hands-on experience, mentorship, and exposure to real-world diagnostics across multiple hospital sites. We are committed to supporting students as they build foundational skills, gain confidence in a clinical environment, and explore diverse career pathways within the laboratory profession.

High School Students

High school students interested in co-op placements should contact their school co-op teacher directly for opportunities at local hospitals. Most of the high-school co-op placements at our hospitals include a short rotation in the laboratory as part a broader hospital healthcare experience. Special requests can often be made for longer duration in the laboratory should students have a specific interest in laboratory medicine.

Pre-Placement Requirements

Before starting at any hospital site within the IHLP, students must complete all pre-placement requirements. These may include, but are not limited to:

  • Reviewing and acknowledging Privacy & Confidentiality Agreements
  • Meeting immunization requirements
  • Completing required training / learning modules
  • Attending a General Orientation

Clinical Placements –MLA/T & MLT

The IHLP welcomes all clinical placement inquiries from accredited Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) and Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician (MLA/T) programs across the province.

Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician (MLA/T)

Students interested in MLA/T placement opportunities at our local hospitals should have their Program or Practicum Coordinators reach out directly to the site of interest. The initial inquiry should include the following information:
  • School and Program Name
  • School program/placement coordinator name and contact information
  • Exact timeframe for placement
  • Desired placement site

Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT)

The IHLP coordinates MLT Clinical Placements opportunities across the Region. Each year, the process begins in November/December with a survey out to all provincial MLS Programs. MLS Program Coordinators will have an opportunity to identify the number of students they wish to have placed in the IHLP. The IHLP will notify MLS Programs in January/February regarding placements spots that have been allotted.
The IHLP typically offers full clinical rotations across two IHLP locations:

  • Specialized Rotations (Anatomical Pathology/Histology, Microbiology, and Extended Transfusion Science) will take place at Stratford General Hospital (SGH)
  • Core Lab Rotations (Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, and Basic Transfusion Science) will occur at one of our non-Stratford IHLP sites.

To support this split-site placement model, several IHLP locations offer housing or accommodation support, making it more accessible and feasible for students to gain experience at our rural sites.

Students interested in clinical placements in the IHLP should reach out to their MLS Program Coordinators. General placement inquiries can also be submitted through the Contact Us form.

Pre-Placement Requirements

Both MLA/T and MLT students must meet pre-placement requirements before starting with any IHLP hospital. These requirements may include but are not limited to:

  • Reviewing and acknowledging HPHA’s Privacy & Confidentiality Agreement and Acceptable Use of Computers Policy
  • Meeting immunization requirements
  • Providing proof of current N95 Mask Fit
  • Providing a current vulnerable sector check
  • Completing required training / learning modules
